Women in feudal Japan were responsible for supporting their husband and family, defending their household, controlling finances, managing workers and during the period of 1185 – 1333, in the Kamakura period, women were to make sure their children were brought up in the proper samurai upbringing.
Women in this period had rights to obtain land and property. After this period, daughters were used like puppets in marriage because of power struggles. This had a great impact on the influence of women.
In 17th century, women lost their rights to obtaining land and property. The story of Nakano Takeko had a great effect on the future of Japanese women.
Today in Japan, women take part in a variety of martial arts and they acquired acknowledgment by winning gold at the 2004 Olympics in Judo.
